Governor Charlie Baker has signed a supplemental appropriations bill approved by the legislature that includes money to reimburse cities and towns for early voting expenses in 2016.

State Auditor Suzanne Bump determined the unfunded mandate to have an early voting program cost municipalities a total of almost $1.064.

Springfield Election Commissioner Gladys Oyola said cities that did more than what the early voting law required are still left footing the bill.

" I would like to the reimbursement expanded for communities like Springfield, Boston, Worcester and Lowell because we have to offer those off-site ( voting) locations in order to reach a bigger population," said Oyola.

Massachusetts will have early voting once again in the 2018 election.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
