Western Mass. State Rep. Stephen Kulik Will Not Run For Re-election

A powerful member of the Massachusetts House leadership from western Massachusetts is not running for re-election.

Democratic State Rep. Stephen Kulik of Worthington, vice chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, announced he will end a 25-year career on Beacon Hill after his current term.

Kulik represents the 1st Franklin District which consists of 19 towns and is the most rural legislative district in the state.

"It was a great opportunity, a great challenge and a very rewarding experience in terms of the satisfaction of working with so many people on so many important issues," Kulik said in a telephone interview Monday.

Kulik’s announcement came a day after Democratic State Rep. John Scibak of South Hadley announced he will not run for a 9th term in 2018.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
