With the play “The Mountaintop,” the Black Theatre Troupe of Upstate NY is proving Black History Month is not just a fabricated event to entertain African-American audiences. The work shows how the history of the United States is a shared experience between all races.

Theater is an always changing art form. For many there is nothing like the joy of attending a great musical; while others prefer the intensity of a good drama. The only thing that might challenge either is the laughter generated by a well-written comedy.

This week’s run of “Annie” at Proctors is more than an opportunity to enjoy family entertainment in a dreary month. For those of us who remember the struggle of Proctors in its early days, “Annie” is a show that is an important link to the survival of the historic Schenectady theatre.

Now that a new year has arrived, it’s customary to look back at the year past. In theater, 2023 was a time of struggle. Audiences started to return to live entertainment, but slowly. Almost every venue I know claimed attendance was dangerously off.
