New York’s 21st Congressional district is nearly 15,000 square miles and extends from Watertown to Plattsburgh and Syracuse to the Canadian border. With less than three weeks to the election, the two candidates vying for the seat are attending rallies and forums across the region, including recent events in Plattsburgh.
Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is seeking her fourth term representing the expansive northern New York district. Her campaign held a “Super Saturday Rally” last weekend on the Old Base Oval in Plattsburgh. She offered a stump speech praising President Trump and attacking Tedra Cobb, her Democratic opponent and a former St. Lawrence County legislator who lost to Stefanik in 2018.  “I’m running on my record of results, of keeping my promises to this community and this district. I’ve never voted for a tax increase.  My opponent she’s voted to raise taxes 20 times as a county legislator. This is a clear choice on the ballot. I am running on my record of results for you. She represents the far left.”

During a candidate forum Monday evening, Cobb was asked about some of Stefanik’s claims.  “Unfortunately Elise Stefanik says a lot of things and much of them are not true.”

Also attending the weekend rally was Republican Assemblyman Dan Stec, who is running to fill the seat being vacated by retiring Senator Betty Little.  “I’ve been in the Assembly for 8 years fighting a lot of the craziness that’s coming up the street from New York City up the Hudson and up our way that we reject. I will continue to be your voice. I will continue to make sure I represent the North Country and your values. There’s a wide breadth of people that see what’s happening in Albany. They don’t like it. They want to make sure that somebody is there that can articulate the issues, stick up for your rights, stick up for your interests and make sure that’s somebody’s speaking truth to power. It’s gonna be me.”

His opponent, Democratic Clinton County Treasurer Kimberly Davis, attended the candidates’ forum Tuesday and said her fiscal experience is a key strength.  “We have an incredible deficit going into this. We had one before COVID, it even made it worse, there are estimates 13, 15, 16 billion dollars. We cannot put this completely on the backs of property tax payers. We have to look at anything that is nonessential to the service of our citizens first.”

It’s estimated about 100 people attended Stefanik’s weekend rally in Plattsburgh.
