Conversation With Outgoing APA Commissioner Richard Booth

Richard Booth
Adirondack Park Agency
Richard Booth

Cornell University Professor of City and Regional Planning Richard Booth is one of two out-of-park commissioners at the Adirondack Park Agency.  The board is responsible for making the final decisions over land use and management within the Blue Line.  Booth, whose term ends June 30th, has become increasingly critical of the governor and what he says is the Cuomo administration’s influence over the APA Board.  As his term nears its end, Booth tells WAMC’s North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley he would not stay even if re-appointed.Adirondack Park Agency Board chair Lani Ulrich has also announced her intent to leave the agency when her term expires on June 30th.

The Governor’s press office told WAMC Thursday afternoon that the process is underway to nominate replacements for Ulrich and Booth.  The office also e-mailed a statement responding to Richard Booth’s recent criticisms:

“The APA Board, composed of community leaders, voted overwhelmingly in a 9-1 decision in favor of amendments to the State Land Master Plan. This deliberative and transparent decision was influenced by a robust public engagement process that involved nearly 700 people attending a series of public meetings and submitting more than 800 public comments. The Board’s decision not only highlights their independence but also the importance of ensuring that the future of this vital resource remains in the hands of the community.”
