The State University of New York Board of Trustees have appointed longtime SUNY Oswego President Deborah Stanley as interim chancellor.

Stanley takes over for Jim Malatras, who resigned under pressure earlier this month over his close ties to disgraced former Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Malatras had been appointed without a national search in 2020. The Board of Trustees will launch a global search for a new full-time chancellor in January.

Stanley replaces Malatras on January 15 after wrapping up 25 years as Oswego president this month.

United University Professions, which represents faculty on 29 SUNY campuses, applauded the selection of Stanley.

“We fully support the SUNY Board of Trustees' decision to appoint Dr. Deborah Stanley as interim chancellor of SUNY and we are hopeful that she will effectively lead SUNY through this transition period. Dr. Stanley is an immensely accomplished leader, who has served the students, faculty and staff of SUNY Oswego for nearly 25 years," UUP President Fred Kowal said in a statement Monday. “Today, we also renew our call for a nationwide search for a permanent SUNY chancellor with a high priority on candidates of diversity, and an open, communicative process. In the coming year, there is critical work that will need to be done and we look forward to working with the Board of Trustees, Dr. Stanley, and the other unions representing SUNY employees to deliver resources and support for our members, our students, and our patients across New York."
