New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Monday signed a package of limousine safety regulations into law. The Senate and Assembly passed the measures in January

The law includes seatbelt requirements, impounding of defective limousines, increased penalties for illegal u-turns, and new commercial driver's license requirements for limo drivers. The package also establishes a passenger task force and drug and alcohol testing of for-hire drivers.

The regulations were crafted with input from families of the victims of the Schoharie limo crash in October 2018 that killed 20.

"Following the deadly limousine crash in Schoharie that claimed the lives of 20 people, the need for updated laws governing stretch limousines was apparent," Capital Region Democratic Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara said in a statement Monday. "That's why work on this important legislative package has continued here at the State Capitol on behalf of the families that have lost loved ones and for the safety of our communities. While we see these important bills signed into law to strengthen regulations and improve standards here in New York, I also urge US Congress and Senate leaders to come together and pass similar measures in Washington DC to ensure the safety of passengers in every state."
