Governor Andrew Cuomo says landmarks across New York state will be lit in honor of WorldPride and the LGBTQ community.
Landmarks include the spire of One World Trade Center, the Kosciuszko Bridge, the Mid-Hudson Bridge, the SUNY Central Administration Building, the State Education Building, the Alfred E. Smith Building, the State Fair Exposition Center and LED boards featured at the State Fair Main Gate.
The structures will be illuminated in the colors of the transgender flag Thursday and Friday in recognition of Trans Day of Action, and in the colors of the pride flag on June 29 and 30 in celebration of Pride in New York. Additionally, Niagara Falls will be lit in the colors of the pride flag June 30 and July 5 for its Pride at the Falls event.
During Pride Month, Governor Cuomo has announced several initiatives and events to encourage and promote the WorldPride celebrations. On June 1, Governor Cuomo announced the opening of the New York State WorldPride Welcome Center on Christopher Street in New York City's West Village, just steps from the Stonewall National Monument. On June 5, the Governor announced the opening of the LGBTQ Pride Month Exhibit in the New York State Capitol, which honors the impact of LGBTQ New Yorkers and includes portions of the International AIDS Quilt. The LGBTQ Pride flag was also raised over the Capitol for the first time in history. On June 13, Governor Cuomo announced the winners of the New York State WorldPride Ambassadors Competition and highlighted their stories in a video.
