With Democrats now set to control both houses of the New York State Legislature, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie has laid out a framework for the term ahead.

Speaker Heastie released a plan Wednesday after what he characterized as a “turning point in New York politics.”

In the year ahead, Heastie’s agenda includes steps intended to address inequalities in education, update election laws, improve infrastructure, reform the criminal justice system, and curb gun violence.

Other items are reforming rent laws, passing the Child Victims Act to extend the statute of limitations for criminal and civil sexual abuse cases, protecting women’s reproductive rights, making health care more affordable, and economic development.

Current Senate minority leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins is in line to be Senate majority leader in the new year.

Lucas Willard is a reporter and host at WAMC Northeast Public Radio, which he joined in 2011.
