NYSDEC Testing Waterways For PFOA Contamination

PFOA formula

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is continuing to test the Hoosic River and its tributaries to determine how the potentially carcinogenic chemical PFOA is moving through the local area.

DEC collected 12 samples from the Eagle Bridge area in Rensselaer County on August 25th and will collect another 13 samples once the river returns to low-flow conditions, according to spokesman Sean Mahar.

Testing results are expected in mid-September.

Buildings owned by company Saint-Gobain in the nearby village of Hoosick Falls have been declared a state Superfund site and are being investigated as a source of the chemical pollutant.

DEC is also investigating the nearby Hoosick Falls landfill as a potential Superfund site.
