Group Wants To Restore NY State Park's 1930s-Era Bathhouse

An effort is underway in Saratoga Springs to obtain funding to rebuild a Depression-era bathhouse and re-open it as a wellness center.

The Daily Gazette of Schenectady reports that a new organization named after the Coesa mineral spring in Saratoga Spa State Park has applied for state funding to reopen the Roosevelt II bathhouse.

The group says it will take more than a half-million dollars to get the 80-year-old building into shape. Last week, the Saratoga Springs City Council voted to support the group's application for state funding.

The bathhouse is near Roosevelt I, which remains a working bathhouse. Both opened in the mid-1930s when Franklin D. Roosevelt was president. The former New York governor believed Saratoga should have European-style spas.
