Capital District Congressman Paul Tonko is introducing legislation to crack down on illegal doping in thoroughbred horse racing.

The Democrat’s legislation would call on the United States Anti-Doping Agency to establish uniform rules and regulations on drugs in the American Thoroughbred industry.

Tonko called thoroughbred racing an important piece of the upstate economy.

“And if we can’t build that integrity then we’re failing in the opportunity to draw a stronger bit of economic impact, and again, it’s about promoting fairness for the athlete, the animal, and in this case, the horse.”

Tonko represents Saratoga Springs and is a co-chair of the Congressional Horse Caucus.
