FEMA Advances Delayed Schoharie County Public Safety Building Project

At the urging of members of New York’s congressional delegation, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has agreed to expedite a Schoharie County project.

Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, both Democrats, and Representative Chris Gibson, a Republican, announced Wednesday that FEMA has approved plans to relocate the Schoharie County Public Safety Building. The project had been stalled for months.

The facility was severely damaged by Tropical Storm Irene in 2011. The lawmakers appealed to FEMA Administrator William Craig Fugate to expedite a review of the project.

With plans approved, $37 million will be allocated from the agency to move the building out of the floodplain.
