At Least 7 Dead In Metro-North Crash

Officials say six people were killed on the northbound train, one person in an SUV, and at least 12 people were injured when a commuter train struck a vehicle on the tracks north of New York City.

A Metro-North spokesman says the crossing gates had come down on top of the SUV, which was stopped on the tracks. The driver got out to look at the rear of the vehicle, got back in, drove forward and was struck.

The front of the train and the SUV caught fire. Smoke poured out of the scorched front rail car, its windows blackened.

Passengers described a bump and said they smelled gasoline from the vehicle. More than 750 people were aboard the train. They were moved to the rear.
