Cuomo Begins Major Women's Rights Push

Pat Arnow

Governor Andrew Cuomo's first big push in his 2013 legislative agenda is to further protect women's rights in the workplace, crack down on the criminal exploitation of women, and better protect abortion rights. WAMC’s Dave Lucas reports.

Cuomo met Thursday morning with women's rights advocates a day after he made the cause a rousing part of his State of the State speech. Cuomo made it clear Thursday that he will give the same high-octane effort he gave the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2011 which remains the capstone of his progressive agenda.

Cuomo said society must face the statistical disadvantage for women in income, professional advancement, and the discrimination many still face.

The Democrat says he's also deciding to disagree with Catholic Archbishop Timothy Dolan who urged Cuomo not to expand abortion rights.
