Some Upstate New York Schools Delay Openings

Albany, NY – There will be no opening day this week for some schools in upstate New York communities hit by Tropical Storm Irene. WAMC's Dave Lucas reports...

The Schoharie Central School District has moved opening day up to September 12th. Its school is a staging area for recovery efforts and is being used for meals and lodging for nearly 190 emergency personnel.

Some other schools in the Schoharie and Hudson Valley are being used as shelters. The state education department didn't immediately have a total number of schools affected.

The state school boards association says there are some delays because roads are too damaged for buses and because some students had to move from their homes to stay with friends, relatives and neighbors.

Barbara Bradley of the association says she's never seen such disruption.
