Albany, NY – This week, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said his administration is actively looking into the expansion of commercial gaming in the state. WAMC's Greg Fry spoke with one expert, who says the impact of such a decision could have effects in and out of New York ...

Joseph Weinert is the Senior Vice President of the New Jersey-based Spectrum Gaming Group, an international research and consulting firm, which assists governments and casino investors.

He says states are in somewhat of an arms race regarding gaming, in an attempt to keep betting dollars within their borders. He says gaming could take away from existing gambling facilities...

"Some of the racetrack casinos out in western New York might have an opportunity to take business that may be going to Pennsylvania," says Weinert. "But more likely they would attract some players who are currently playing table games at the Seneca casinos, or possibly in Niagara Falls, Ontario."

Massachusetts is preparing to consider gaming legislation. In Pennsylvania, a gaming expansion led to more than one billion dollars in gaming tax revenue last year.
