New Paltz, NY – The head of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has announced his resignation. WAMC's Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Greg Fry reports that Chairman and CEO Jay Walder will leave the position in October...

Walder, who joined the MTA in 2009, will be leaving to become CEO of the MTR Corporation in Hong Kong.

His tenure has been filled with criticism regarding the authority's operations, and over a budget shortfall hovering at about a billion dollars. Walder says the authority has accomplished quite a lot in a short period, with the support of two governors, the mayor of New York City, a hard-working board, and many others.

Walder touted efficiency measures that he says will save the authority nearly four billion dollars over a five-year period. He leaves at a time when many continue to call for a forensic audit of the authority's operations.
