Salem, NY – State police and fire investigators will be back at the scene of a house explosion in eastern New York that killed four people and injured seven others. WAMC's Tristan O'Neill reports...

Authorities say they haven't determined what caused yesterday's early afternoon blast in rural Salem, but officials say a propane leak may have sparked the explosion.

Neighbors of the home on Route 29 said the explosion could be heard a mile away.

"I just heard an explosion. I was coming outside the house. It sounded like a bomb went off."

"I just heard the loudest noise I've ever heard in my life. Everybody was hysterical. Everybody was calling help, and there wasn't anybody there - it took a while."

The two-story rental house was obliterated by the explosion. Police say three people were killed at the scene and a fourth died after being taken to a hospital.

The seven others were taken to hospitals in Albany, Westchester and Vermont.

Police haven't released the names of the deceased or the injured.
