Storms Cause Damage and New Flooding Across the Region

Plattsburgh, NY – Schools and roads are closed across central Vermont following flooding from heavy overnight rains. Vermont Emergency Management is updating road closures every hour as high water floods roads, causes mudslides or undermines highways. State offices were put on a reduced workforce status due to flooding in Montpelier, Barre and Waterbury. Shelters opened after emergency personnel evacuated people during the overnight storms. Vermont Emergency Management Director Mike O'Neill says critical areas are in Washington and Orange counties, with some damage in Caledonia county......

Some customers of Green Mountain Power in Washington, Bennington, Windham and Caledonia counties have lost power and may not have it restored until well into the weekend. That's because utility line crews cannot get to areas affected by flooding. Spokesperson Dorothy Schnure.....

Central Vermont Public Service Spokesperson Christine Rivers says about 2900 customers have lost power.....

The storms also caused damage in New York. About 65-thousand utility customers lost power in Broome, Tioga and Chenango counties. In Essex County, Town of Moriah Supervisor Tom Scozzafava reports roads that have just been repaired from last month's floods have once again been damaged......

Vermont Governor Peter Schumlin is touring flood damaged areas today.
More rain is in the forecast and the National Weather Service says more flooding is possible.
