Bill Would Give Municipalities More Power Over Potential Gas Drilling Operations

Albany, NY – A bill before the New York State Legislature would give municipalities more oversight of potential natural gas drilling operations in their communities. WAMC's Greg Fry reports...

The purpose of the bill is to clarify the role of municipalities in the oversight of oil, gas and mining operations within their jurisdiction. The bill would amend the state's environmental conservation laws, allowing for municipalities to enact laws or ordinances, if local laws do not regulate the industries.

One of the bill's co-sponsors in the Senate, James Seward, says the clarification would help avoid potentially costly and time-consuming litigation.

A similar measure has been proposed in the Assembly.
