Albany, NY – Legislation in the New York State Assembly would extend the moratorium on high-volume hydraulic fracturing in New York until June of 2012. WAMC's Greg Fry reports...
Assemblyman Bob Sweeney says the measure would prohibit the issuance of new permits for drilling in New York. It's similar to a measure that gained approval in both the State Senate and Assembly, and was vetoed by Governor David Paterson, who instead opted to issue an executive order. Sweeney proposal takes into consideration the regulations to be issued by the state DEC this summer...
"I would expect that the Legislature won't be around Albany when the DEC issues its report and whatever else it's going to do, and so we're not going to have a chance to weigh in if there are aspects of what they propose to do that we don't like."
The Business Council of New York State, and the Independent Oil and Gas Association of New York have both objected to the proposal, which currently has no sponsor in the Senate.
