Albany, Ny – The New York Public Interest Research Group is calling on New York's two U.S. Senators to support alternative climate change legislation. Capital District Bureau Chief Dave Lucas reports.
NYPIRG members gathered this morning outside the Albany offices of Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, where they released a new report, which suggests climate change policy can be instituted more fairly and effectively. The report includes analysis conducted by the University of Massachusetts Political Economy Research Institute, which factors regional variations in consumption into the energy equation. NYPIRG says the consumer would see a measurable and direct benefit from the rebate. Members of NYPIRG were scheduled to meet this afternoon with Senators Schumer and Gillibrand, to present the new report and solicit their support.
A representative from Senator Gillibrand's office came out to greet the advocates. She would not go on tape but released a written statement by the Senator, who thanked NYPIRG for their support and advocacy on the issue while suggesting that all interested parties work together to reduce dependence on coal-fied power plants and create green jobs in the process.
