Springfield Plans Feasibility Study Of Municipal Broadband Network

wikipedia.org

The city of Springfield, Massachusetts plans to have a feasibility study done on building a municipal broadband network.

Exploring a fiber-to-the-home project in Springfield comes at a time when the pandemic has led to more remote work and study and exposed a large digital divide.

There is now also the availability of federal funds from the American Rescue Plan to possibly pay for the infrastructure for the broadband network.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno’s office announced the plans for a feasibility study following a meeting with department heads and City Councilor Jesse Lederman, who has been championing the idea.

Lederman spoke with WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
