The Berkshire County chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America has endorsed Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey in the Democratic primary.

In the Senate since 2013, Markey is attempting to fend off Congressman Joe Kennedy in a spirited primary.

Spokesperson Amillie Coster tells WAMC that Markey’s support of the Green New Deal and Medicare For All make him the DSA chapter’s pick.

“He’s for decades been fighting for the people and fighting against war and AOC has endorsed him," said Coster. "So, while we try to stay autonomous, we also look at what our comrades are doing around the country and leaders are doing that help inform us on certain decisions and whether we go that direction or not.”

The chapter previously endorsed Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse in the 1st House district primary.

In-person voting is September 1st.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018, following stints at WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Western Massachusetts, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. His free time is spent with his cat Harry, experimental electronic music, and exploring the woods.
