Popular Farmers' Market Remains On Hold

WAMC

In an order issued in late April, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health reiterated that farmers’ markets are considered an essential business, and just like grocery stores, should be permitted to open with precautions.

But at a time of year when outdoor markets and farm stands would begin to bustle, many remain closed.

One of the popular markets that has yet to open for the season is the Farmers’ Market at Forest Park in Springfield.

The city’s parks director Patrick Sullivan said Monday the details about how the market will operate are still being discussed.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Belle Rita Novak, the longtime market manager.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
