A funeral is planned Thursday for a police officer from Springfield, Massachusetts who accidentally drowned in a Vermont lake while on a family vacation.

Officer Aaron McNab,30, graduated from the Springfield Police Academy last November.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno said in just 9 months as a police officer McNab had an impact.

"He was a good officer," said Sarno noting that McNab had made "a lot" of arrests.

"When you talk to his family, all he ever wanted to be was a police officer," said Sarno.

Acting Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood said the loss of McNab has hit members of the department hard.

Before joining the Springfield police department, McNab was a corrections officer in Connecticut.
