Hearing Exposes Dysfunction At Massachusetts RMV

The scandal at the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles widened further this week with several stunning disclosures at a legislative oversight hearing.

Officials knew for years that the RMV had not been processing notifications from other states about driving violations by Massachusetts motorists.

The revelation of the backlog came to light after it was learned that 23-year-old Volodymyr Zhukovskyy of West Springfield had been arrested in Connecticut for drunken driving weeks before he allegedly caused a crash in New Hampshire in June that killed seven motorcyclists.  The notice that should have resulted in Zhukovskyy’s commercial driver’s license being suspended was lost in the backlog at the RMV.

Democratic State Senator Eric Lesser of Longmeadow, a member of the Joint Committee on Transportation, has called for the resignation of the RMV official in charge of the division that was supposed to process the out-of-state citations.

Lesser spoke with WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
