Psychiatrist Says Suspect Insane In Deadly Wrong-Way Crash

A psychiatrist for the defense says a Vermont man facing five murder charges after driving the wrong-way on an interstate and crashing into an oncoming vehicle, killing five teenagers, was legally insane at the time.
Steven Bourgoin has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and other charges in the October 2016 crash on Interstate 89 in Williston.

Bourgoin's attorneys acknowledge he caused the crash, but say he was insane at the time.

Dr. David Rosmarin said Tuesday that Bourgoin was undergoing a manic psychotic episode, thought he was in danger and believed he was getting messages through the radio and other devices. Rosmarin diagnosed him as having bipolar disorder with psychotic features.

Chittenden County State's Attorney Sarah George said this was the first time that Bourgoin had been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and other mental experts did not reach the same finding.
