Master Plan Unveiled For Springfield's Forest Park

WAMC

Plans have been unveiled for an ambitious renovation of one of the largest urban parks in western Massachusetts.

A master improvement plan for Springfield’s Forest Park calls for renovations and new construction of buildings and grounds in the area of the park that dates back to the late 1800s.

The centerpiece of the plan is a new conservatory-style greenhouse surrounded by gardens.

The Springfield Park Commission will work over the next several months to come up with cost estimates, according to Chairman Brian Santaniello.

"The park really needs a face lift especially where the old greenhouses were, " said Santaniello. " It is a really really intensive plan."

Mayor Domenic Sarno said about $10 million has been spent in the last 2-3 years on improvements to smaller parks throughout the city.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
