Springfield City Council To Vote On First Year CPA Projects Recommendations

City Councilors in Springfield are scheduled to vote Monday to approve funding for several projects under the Massachusetts Community Preservation Act.

Community Preservation Commission chairman Robert McCarroll said 13 projects are being recommended for Springfield’s first year of participation in the program.

"One is a community housing project, five are historic resources projects ,and the remainders are open space - recreational uses projects," said McCarroll.

Springfield voters in 2017 approved the Community Preservation Act, which adds a surcharge to property tax bills.

It raised $1.3 million in the first year.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
