Decades In The Making, Seniors Get Their Own Center In Springfield

Decades after lobbying began to get a senior center built in the largest city in western Massachusetts, a new state-of-the art facility will open Monday.

The new $13 million, two story 25,000-square foot center is surrounded by nature in the city of Springfield’s Blunt Park. The building contains a large multifunction room, cafeteria, kitchen, a library, and activity rooms with exercise equipment, computers, and billiard tables, according to Peter Garvey, the city’s director of construction.

"We've toured a lot of senior centers and this one is by far the best one in Massachusetts that we saw," said Garvey.

Hundreds of politicians, dignitaries, and seniors attended a ceremony Friday to formally dedicate the Raymond A. Jordan Senior Center, named for the now-retired former State Representative and federal housing official.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
