Columbia Gas Company says it has begun repairs on over 200 gas leaks throughout its service area in western Massachusetts.
Following a series of meetings with environmental activists earlier this year, Steve Bryant, president of Columbia Gas, announced a new program to repair leaks classified as “Grade 3”, or ones that do not pose an immediate risk to life and property, but do result in harm to the atmosphere.
" We will be undertaking this as rapidly as we can, striking the right balance between getting these leaks ( fixed) and done in a cost-effective manner," said Bryant.
Its estimated it could take almost a decade to repair the thousands of know gas leaks in western Massachusetts.
More than 560 leaks are in the city of Springfield alone.
