Activists in western Massachusetts continue to campaign for the release of a local man who is one of about 1,400 Iraqis rounded up across the country for deportation.
The Pioneer Valley Workers Center has collected 1,500 signatures on a petition calling for the release of Niberd Abdalla. Congressman Jim McGovern has written a letter of support.
A federal judge in Detroit has suspended the deportations saying Abdalla and the rest are entitled to their day in court.
Attorney Buz Eisenberg is trying to get Abdalla’s 2010 deportation case reopened.
"There are windows that have passed, but there might be windows open and my job is to figure out which ones are open, said Eisenberg.
Abdalla, who came to the United States as a teenager more than 40 years ago, was arrested June 8th by federal immigration agents.
