Baker Administration Announces Grants To Prep Sites For Development

The Massachusetts State House

The Baker administration announced a first round of funding awards Tuesday under a new $15 million program to help municipalities attract shovel-ready development projects.

The idea of the program, Baker explained in Springfield last year, is to increase the inventory across the state of sites that are ready for construction when businesses, retailers, or restaurants come calling.

"We don't have as many what I would call  'spec ready sites' where you already have the utilities and all the other stuff in place for someone who wants to make a significant investment to do so," explained Baker.

One of the largest Site Readiness Program Grant Awards, $300,000, was announced for Westfield to expand the Turnpike Industrial Park.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
