A hallmark event in western Massachusetts is being put on for the 30th consecutive year this spring.
What started as a competition between Springfield and Battle Creek, Michigan to see which community could seat the most number of people for a breakfast has evolved into a block party that attracts thousands of people to the metro center on a Saturday morning in May.
Newly installed Hampden County Sheriff Nick Cocchi was announced Thursday as honorary chair of the 2017 World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast that will be held on May 13.
" It is a great honor," said Cocchi. " Springfield is a wonderful beautiful city. There are a lot of great things happening in the city and we need to continue to promote the positive."
The event producer, Spirit of Springfield, will distribute 60,000 free tickets to the breakfast in area schools.
