A Vermont city that came to symbolize the struggle against heroin in rural America is taking another step toward recovery.
On Monday, local, state and federal officials announced that three houses once considered drug houses on Park Avenue in Rutland were seized by the U.S. government so they can be turned into owner-occupied homes.
The area where the homes are located has been considered the epicenter of Rutland's heroin crisis.
The properties were turned over to the city, which in turn transferred ownership to the group NeighborWorks of Western Vermont.
The group will rehabilitate them and sell them on condition they are maintained as owner-occupied homes.
