Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin will be in Pownal Monday to mark the lifting of the “Do Not Drink” order for the town’s water. Pownal is one of several Northeast communities facing PFOA contamination.Pownal’s Fire District Number Two system had been contaminated with slightly elevated levels of PFOA, an industrial chemical linked to ill health effects including cancer. On Thursday, Shumlin announced testing shows a new treatment system is removing all PFOA.

The Democrat will visit the town’s supply well on Route 346 at 3:30 Monday to mark the occasion. In March PFOA was found at 26 and 27 parts per trillion. The state health department has an advisory limit of 20 parts per trillion. More than 400 water system users have been resorting to bottled water. Nearby Hoosick Falls, NY has also been affected by PFOA contamination.
