Governor Peter Shumlin, U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy, and the Vermont Commission on Women are among those that observed Pay Equity Day, which highlights continuing wage disparities between men and women.
Senator Leahy marked the occasion in Washington with a speech on the Senate floor calling it unacceptable that women nationally make 79 cents when men in similar jobs make a dollar.

In Vermont, women do a little better, earning 84 percent of what men do. Governor Shumlin signed a proclamation calling for the state to do better.

Three groups working on women's issues released a report pointing to men and women being segregated into different jobs as one source of pay disparity.
