Construction work has abruptly stopped on one of the two resort casinos planned in Massachusetts.
Faced with a legal appeal to an environmental permit, Wynn Resorts froze all hiring, cancelled job fairs, and postponed the scheduled groundbreaking for the $1.7 billion casino in Everett, just north of Boston.
Its means the MGM Springfield casino should be the first to open in the state. MGM Springfield President Mike Mathis said construction work on the $950 million project will be ratcheting up this summer.
" We are absolutely on track for our opening in the fall of '18," Mathis said this week.
The MGM casino’s scheduled opening was already delayed a year because of the reconstruction of the I-91 viaduct through downtown Springfield.
