People were asked to point out their favorite Tyler St. spots during a meeting in August.

A once thriving Pittsfield community abutting the former General Electric facility is receiving state redevelopment support.MassDevelopment is sending a Transformative Development Initiative Fellow to help Pittsfield revive the Tyler Street area. It is the main avenue through the Morningside neighborhood, a commercial and residential mix that is bookended by Berkshire Medical Center on the downtown thoroughfare North St. and the William Stanley Business Park, which used to house GE. Outgoing Mayor Dan Bianchi grew up in that community.

“I think that they will see the value in investing in that neighborhood, but also maintaining the very valuable industrial-zoned land that we have that area and how that will compliment the development,” said Bianchi.

Having experience in economic development and city planning, the fellow – yet to be named – is expected to work with area leaders for three years.

State and city leaders met with the public in August to generate ideas for the Morningside neighborhood.

Jim was WAMC’s Assistant News Director and hosted WAMC's flagship news programs: Midday Magazine, Northeast Report and Northeast Report Late Edition.
