Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker is planning to use a new HBO documentary to lobby state legislators to pass his bill to address the opioid crisis.

Baker has invited members of the legislature to a Boston hotel Tuesday night for a premiere of the film that chronicles 8 young adults on Cape Cod as they struggle with drug addictions that end up killing some of them.

Baker filed his bill in October and testified last month at a legislative hearing.

"The status quo is unacceptable and it needs to be disrupted," Baker told a legislative panel at the Statehouse on Nov. 17.

Some legislators say the bill infringes on civil liberties because it would allow hospitals to involuntarily commit drug users for treatment, and limit initial prescriptions for opioids to a three-day supply.

The documentary airs on HBO beginning December 28th.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
