BCC Turf Proponents Holding Rally

Proponents of a proposed athletic turf field at Berkshire Community College are holding a rally at the Pittsfield campus Monday night.Area coaches and athletes are gathering at 6:30 p.m. behind Paterson Field House where the lighted turf field and new grandstand would go. Mike MacDonald is part of the group behind the $2 million community-driven project slated to receive $1.2 million in state and city funding.

“I’ve had situations where my son’s playing football against another Berkshire County team in the playoffs and we have to go to Westfield, Chicopee or Woburn to do that,” MacDonald said. “This facility will eliminate that and provide a safer playing surface for a longer period of the year.”

Another citizen group concerned about the field’s potential environmental impacts is challenging state approval of the project’s working conditions.
