New UMass President To Visit All Five Campuses In A Single Day

WAMC

In the run up to his formal inauguration Thursday as University of Massachusetts President, Marty Meehan plans to visit all five campuses in a single day.

Meehan will start out Monday morning at 7:30 on the campus of UMass Dartmouth, and end the day almost 12 hours later at UMass Boston, according to a schedule released by the president’s office.

Spokesman Bob Connolly said Meehan will visit classes, meet with students and faculty and tap into other facets of campus life.

" He is  eager to get on the road and to experience the trip throughout the UMass system and to be on the campuses," said Connolly. " He is quite looking forward to it actually."

Connolly said the point of the five-campus-in-a-day visits is to underscore the UMass system’s mission which includes education, research and boosting the state’s economy.

At UMass Amherst, Meehan is scheduled to visit an engineering lab, a history class on the Civil Rights movement, and the Blue Wall dining facility in the Campus Center.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
