The current president of the city council in Springfield, Massachusetts, said he plans to wield the gavel for one more term.
Council President Mike Fenton announced Friday he had secured the support of a majority of the 13- member council to remain president for an unprecedented third consecutive term.
"What I heard consistently from my colleagues is that they wanted stability, integrity, and skill in the leadership of the city council ,particularly in light of the fact we have some very serious developments going on now in the city of Springfield, mainly MGM Springfield," Fenton said.
The council president will be chosen at an informal year-end caucus and then officially elected at the council’s first meeting in 2016.
Fenton said in an interview he would not pursue a fourth consecutive term.
