A group that works to preserve housing stock in poor neighborhoods is expanding into a western Massachusetts city with a Veterans Day project.

The first project Revitalize CDC is undertaking as it expands into Holyoke is to restore the family home of Air Force veteran Scott Leary. He, his wife Jessica and their three children live in a house built by Leary’s great grandfather in 1901.

The Learys are struggling financially, and Scott said the home needs a new roof, windows, an upgraded heating system and other improvements.

"This house is like a member of the family. It houses all our memories," Leary said.

Contractors are already at work on the major home repairs.  Volunteers will pitch in with painting, cleaning and yard work on Veterans Day.  Revitalze CDC repaired more than 50 homes in Springfield in the past year.
