Pittsfield Mayor Dan Bianchi submitted a $145 million budget proposal for fiscal 2016 to the city council Tuesday night. The spending plan is up nearly three percent from the previous one.

It includes a $59 million school department budget, up nearly $2 million from the previous year’s. City expenses would increase due to debt service, rising energy costs and public safety contracts, according to Mayor Bianchi. He says he expects the city council will understand the increases and proposed revenue hikes like property taxes and local receipts.

“We’re trying to hold the line at the same time on the municipal side we don’t want to compromise public safety,” said Bianchi.

Bianchi is also proposing a $10 million capital projects budget including a $3.5 million reconstruction of the main runway at Pittsfield’s airport. The city council will review the budgets throughout June.
