Bill Uses Admissions Tax To Help Pay For Hartford Stadium

wikipedia.org

The city of Hartford, Connecticut is hoping to pay off a planned minor league baseball stadium with proceeds from the state's admission tax on tickets. On Monday city leaders, including Mayor Pedro Segarra, went before the legislature's Finance Revenue and Bonding Committee supporting legislation that would transfer the 10 percent tax on each ticket, about $426,000 annually, to a special account used to pay down debt from building the stadium.

Segarra says Hartford residents "don't want to get stuck" with paying for the ballpark. He says the facility will ultimately benefit the entire state and this proposal ensures only those using the stadium would pay the tax.

Senate Minority Leader Len Fasano opposes the bill, saying the private ballpark should not receive special treatment after moving the team from New Britain.
