Connecticut To Require Body Cams For Police Officers

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says the state will eventually require body cameras on police officers, but action is not likely this year.

The Republican-American reports (http://bit.ly/1IQaBlC ) that Malloy told reporters Thursday that an estimated cost of $300 to $1,000 per officer for the equipment is an initial hurdle.

The National Conference of State Legislatures says legislatures in 30 states are considering body camera measures.

Connecticut lawmakers are considering a bill in which police departments in three communities would test body-worn video recorders under state police guidance. A pilot program would run from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30, 2016.

Police body cameras have again become an issue following the fatal shooting of an unarmed black motorist by a white police officer in South Carolina. The officer has been charged with murder.
