Ex-Berkshire Nursing Home Worker Sentenced To 2 Years For Patient Assault

A former Berkshire County nursing home employee charged with sexually assaulting a bedridden patient under his care has been sentenced to two years in prison.Paul Shartrand was found guilty of assault and battery on a disabled person and caretaker abuse of a disabled person in Berkshire Superior Court, but was acquitted of assault with intent to rape, the most serious of the charges.

The 48-year-old was sentenced to two years in prison and two years of probation on the condition he undergo mental health evaluation and counseling.   

Prosecutors say the certified nursing assistant assaulted the 55-year-old patient in August 2012 at the Laurel Lake Center for Health and Rehabilitation in Lee. He was allegedly caught in the act by a supervisor.  

According to The Berkshire Eagle, Shartrand's attorney said the accusation was made by a supervisor who had a grudge against his client.
